Accessory overload

The latest trend in jewelry is to stack. Rings, bracelets, necklaces and now ear adornments. Ear adornments? Yes, beyond simple earrings, ear cuffs are making a huge comeback.

What is the stylish mature woman to do?

My advice is always to err on the side of tasteful restraint. As a mature woman, I’m not sure we can carry off the full load of stackable jewelry. So, unlike our younger counterparts, choose an area on which you wish to focus. Don’t stack rings and bracelets and earrings.

Some tips:

  • Stackable rings are probably the easiest look to pull off. Just make sure that you’ve stacked rings on one finger – not every finger. Stackable rings have a funky vibe, so you shouldn’t wear them next to your antique filigree ring.
  • Stackable bracelets are  easy to wear. It’s ok to mix metal colours, too, so feel free to experiment. If you do so, keep your rings to a minimum so as not to overdo it.
  • Stackable necklaces are also easy to wear. Again, choose this as a focal point and keep all other jewelry simple or non-existent. Make sure your necklaces compliment the shape of your neckline and don’t compete with patterns on your top or dress.
  • Stackable earrings are a trickier thing for a mature woman to pull off. A lot depends on your style personality. If you normally favour a funky, boho look, then you can match a trendy earring and ear cuff. Again, keep this to a minimum, especially if you already have multiple ear piercings.

Go ahead and experiment. But remember Coco Chanel once said, “When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on.” Mustn’t overdo.
