Everyone has a LBD in their wardrobes – perhaps more than one. The iconic Little Black Dress is often reserved for dress-up occasions, such as cocktail parties.

But why relegate this fashion fave to a half dozen wears per year? You can get much more use out of your LBD simply by switching up the accessories and finishings.

Today I appeared on CTV Morning Live to talk about ways to maximize the wear of this dress, and I chose a plain dress as my ‘blank canvas’ for a series of looks. Think of the triple D approach to maximizing your LBD: desk, dinner, dress-up.

DESK – Pair your dress with a chic jacket, tights and booties or pumps for a sophisticated, office-ready look. Choose one statement piece of jewelry, either a necklace or bracelet, depending on how your jacket is styled or embellished. A structured handbag exudes professionalism.

 

DINNER – Out for Friday or Saturday dinner with friends? Perhaps you’re taking in a play or musical performance at the local arts venue. Add a textured wrap to your dress and some sassy coloured heels. A smaller handbag or clutch works well for these evenings out. In this instance, I have removed the strap from my daytime handbag and turned it into a clutch.

 

DRESS-UP – It’s party season, so whether you’re out to a cocktail party, charity gala or Christmas party, your LBD can sparkle! Top your dress with a sophisticated bolero and add a blingy statement necklace. You’ll need an evening clutch – usually metallic or embellished with sparkles – and your best strappy heels. Soar on sky-high Louboutins or add some shine with metallic sandals. Think elegance and sophistication.
