I recently had the opportunity to review four Marcelle products targeted for women aged 50+. The Marcelle Revival line is a comprehensive collection of skin care that rejuvenates and refreshes. I tested:

-Revival Intense Anti-Aging Day Care: $35.95 for 50 ml
-Revival Intense Anti-Aging Night Care: $35.95 for 50 ml
-Revival Intense Anti-Aging Eye Care: $35.95 for 15 ml
-Revival Firming + Brightening Cream Serum $35.95 for 50 ml

Together as a regimen, I found the products to be light and non-greasy. The Night and Day Care creams, especially, were lighter and more translucent than others – something I appreciated. I have found that heavy creams can lead to skin break-outs: the irony of being 50-something. Lighter creams, however, such as the Marcelle products, did not create any issues for me.

The line is fragrance free and I will admit that I’m not really a fan of unscented products in general. Give me a hint of citrus, mint or lavender for a more luxurious experience. That said, I know that having fragrance free products is important to many women, and the Marcelle line certainly fits the bill.

The price point for the collection is also unbeatable. This affordable line offers a quality product and for significantly less than other skin care lines.

I give the Marcelle Revival Line 4 stars out of 5.

NOTE: Thanks to the fine folks at Marcelle for supplying the products.

There are many signs of aging that become evident past age 45 or 50 – some we can address; some we have to live with. Here are my suggestions for addressing these common signs of aging:

Yellowing teeth. You don’t need to spend a lot on whitening procedures. I love Colgate Optic White toothpaste, which is a revolutionary advancement in toothpaste-based whiteners. I have noticed great results using this product.

Rosacea. If you have spidery red lines appearing on your cheeks, you’re not alone. Rosacea is a common skin condition that affects people over the age of 45. If Rosacea is a concern for you, see your doctor or dermatologist.

Age spots. These flat brown or black spots start appearing on arms, legs, face and other areas after age 40. Information from the Mayo Clinic may help you click here.

Grey roots. Many women begin colouring their hair in their 40s. This can be an expensive ongoing treatment, however, nothing ages you like grey roots peeking through. I’ve used Clairol’s Root Touch Up before, with great results.

Dull skin. Over time, skin can lose its lustre. I personally use Estee Lauder Idealist Even Skin Tone Illuminator and find it to be amazing at brightening and evening skin tone. I find the results to be so good that I often skip foundation or powder.

Unkempt brows. Over-tweezed, pencil-thin brows look out of style and are very aging. So are brows that have turned grey. If you want to stay current, well groomed eyebrows are important. An aesthetician can help you re-shape and style your eyebrows. At home, eyebrow pencils can be a girl’s best friend – choose a colour that is close to your hair colour and always remember to blend the lines with a brush.

Facial hair. Oh, so embarrassing peach fuzz or wiry dark chin hairs, nothing says aging like facial hair. There are many products available to deal with facial hair at home, or you can look to your aesthetician for other treatments. For at home treatments, Nair offers a super range of creams and waxing.

That’s my list – can you add to this?

(NOTE: These are my personal suggestions. I do not have any ties to these products, nor have I received any compensation for mentioning them here.)

Mature skin can be delicate and requires regular TLC to keep it glowing. There are hundreds of skin care products on the market, ranging in price from a few dollars to several hundred (yes, Creme de la Mer, I’m talking about you!).

While mature skin has its issues, there are some basics that can help you be your best.

1. Wear sunscreen. I wear sunscreen every day, and have done so for a couple of decades now. Sun damage is permanent – and potentially dangerous (there are three kinds of skin cancer). Many daily facial lotions have SPF 15 built right in. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, choose a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15 that offers both UVA and UVB protection. If you plan on being outdoors for a good portion of the day, choose SPF 30 with UVA and UVB protection. And, wear a hat to protect your scalp.

2. Morning and evening, be sure to wash your face with a gentle soap-free, fragrance-free cleanser. Choose a formulation that meets your skin’s needs: dry, oily or combination.

3. Using a moisturizer with retinol can help to firm the skin’s appearance.

4. Pimples and wrinkles at the same time? Arggh! A topical spot treatment with salicylic acid can help to deal with occasional pimples that result from our fluctuating hormones.

Many women aged 50+ start to see the appearance of fine red veins on their cheeks or nose. This can be a sign of rosacea, a chronic skin condition that affects many people over the age of 30. If this is a concern for you, see a dematologist to determine the best course of action for you.

The best tip for great skin is simply to pay attention to it. Remember that your skin changes as you age so you may need to adjust your regimen to meet your new or emerging skin concerns.
